I like to use natural cleaners in my home whenever possible, especially around my little boys. This recipe is an alternative to harsh chemicals that can have negative effects on both your health and the environment. Fortunately, there’s a natural and effective alternative that you can make yourself using just vinegar and citrus peels.
It’s a simple, affordable, and natural alternative to conventional cleaning products.
Why Make Your Own Citrus Cleaner?
There are several good reasons to make your own cleaner. Firstly, it’s more environmentally friendly because you’re using natural ingredients that are biodegradable and non-toxic. Secondly, it’s more affordable than buying commercial cleaners. And finally, it’s healthier because you’re avoiding the exposure to chemicals found in many conventional cleaning products.
How to Use the Cleaning Spray
This homemade cleaner is safe to use on most surfaces, including countertops, floors, and appliances. However, there are a few things you should avoid using it on:
- Natural stone surfaces like granite and marble can be damaged by the acidity in the vinegar.
- Avoid using it on wood or any surface that has been waxed or oiled, as it can damage the finish.
The Process
I keep a large mason jar with a lid in my cabinet and whenever someone in my family has a citrus fruit, the peel goes in. Keep the citrus covered in vinegar at all times. Once the jar is full and at least 2 weeks have passed, strain out the citrus peels and put them in a spray bottle. You can use it at full strength or dilute it with 1 part water for every 3 parts citrus vinegar. You can add a few drops of essential oils if you’d like as well. I would avoid using it on windows however if you add oils as it can cause streaking. Clean the jar and start filling it up again!
How to Make Citrus Peel Cleaning Spray
To make your own cleaner with vinegar and citrus peels, you’ll need:
- White vinegar
- Citrus peels (lemon, orange, grapefruit, etc.)
- A large glass jar with a lid: I use a quart mason jar
- A spray bottle
The Steps
- Fill the jar with citrus peels and keep covered in vinegar
- Close the jar and shake it well
- Place in a cool, dark place for at least two weeks
- After two weeks, strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
- Use a funnel to pour into a spray bottle. You can use it at full strength but I prefer to dilute it with 1 part water to 3 parts vinegar.
